Rev it Up

In case you missed yesterday's GOOP newsletter, Gwyneth answered some readers' questions. I thought one particular Q&A was helpful and wanted to share it here.

Question: How might a 40 something jump start a sluggish metabolism? (Although I am not yet 40 there is still good information in the reply.)

Gwyneth asked Dr. Oz Garcia to answer this question. Dr. Garcia is a New York city based nutritionist. He is an expert in anti-aging nutrition and the author of several books on the matter including, “Redesigning 50: The No-Plastic-Surgery Guide to 21st-Century Age Defiance”.

Answer: Staying slim and fit is always a challenge but maintaining your girly figure after age forty can be an all out battle. Even maintaining an exact diet and fitness regimen will not beat the penalty of aging.

On average, women gain 25 pounds between the ages of 30 and 60 and it’s not from eating those extra Twinkies. During the course of the natural aging process, women shed lean muscle mass. These lean muscles are the force from which calories are burned even while sitting around and just blinking.

Technically speaking, a pound of lean tissue burns 35 to 50 K’s each day. A loss of just a half-pound of lean muscle could cause you to gain three pounds in just one year, 25 pounds in 10 years, 50 pounds in 20 years and a hefty 75 pounds in 30 years.

So in order for women to stay lean well into their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s they need to maintain those lean muscles. This means working out every day. Yes, every day. Exercise with increased resistance and lower reps will provide increased muscle density and bone strength.

Interval training, when you get your heart pumping at maximum capacity and then slow down for a period of recovery, is great for losing weight in your 20’s and 30’s. Once you’re a bit older, however, you want to regulate your cardio training into a steady bell-shaped progression. Start off slow, work to a crescendo and then work you way back down.

Oh yes, there’s also an eating component. (Don’t act surprised, you knew it was coming.)
  • A good cleanse or detox, like Blue Print Cleanse and Organic Avenue, is an incredible way to jump-start your metabolism.

  • You need to eat lots of lean animal proteins, like salmon or white meat chicken to help you stay fueled and burn calories.

  • Green tea is a metabolic enhancer and natural diuretic that will keep your body flush and lean.

  • Lose the wheat and gluten. Wheat can work as a hormone disrupter and alter your appetite to increase cravings. There are enough good and healthy carbs and starches that won’t gob on the fat and cause your metabolism and energy levels to become sluggish.

  • Try to eat five to six small meals a day. Micro-mealing doesn’t allow you to get too hungry between meals. By eating every few hours, you keep your metabolism firing, your blood sugar stable, and leave your body in a much better state to burn energy.
  • Plan your meals in advance - classic Mediterranean or Japanese are good choice. Also make sure to have ”go-to” snacks such as pistachio’s, fruit, and even eggs on hand at home or at work.
Ready for the good news? Studies show that starting at age 65 the body naturally begins to slowly lose weight. Social Security, here we come!



This post made me feel pretty good because I already do a lot of the things the Doctor suggests. I hope you glean something from this too.

This is a picture of my husband and I on our weddingmoon - we got married and honeymooned in Aruba in 2004. This picture is my absolute favorite from our special day.

  1. I like to think that I am a good friend and listener.

  2. My house is kept pretty neat and tidy. Saying I enjoy cleaning is going a bit too far but I do love a freshly vacuumed floor.

  3. I am unselfish when it comes to helping others and volunteering – my husband might say a bit too much.

  4. My name is Carrie and I am a planner.

  5. I am a quick learner and enjoy a good challenge.

  6. I have a huge soft spot when it comes to animals. I can’t stand to watch commercials for the Humane Society, makes me want to cry and save all of them.

The Perfect Blonde

Okay for those non-blondes I give you permission to skip this post, everyone else pay attention. I came across a page in Marie Claire a few months back featuring an interview to the genius behind the hair color of Naomi Watts and Tory Burch. Colorist Marie Robinson shares some of her tips and also some of her favorite products with us. I have to agree with her that I think my hair looks better the day after a shampoo right after I get out of bed. I have been tempted to skip brushing it but always cave and it never looks the same.




I also have a tear from the latest Bazaar magazine on how to achieve a luminous blonde color. Oh why won't Gwyneth or Reese trade hair with me? Actually I can't complain, I happen to think my hair stylist does pretty decent work. Sometimes I go to her with a picture in hand and other times I just tell her to do what she thinks will look good.





While we are on the topic of hair I will share my latest favorite product with you, MoroccanOil Light. This product is lighter (obviously) than their original product and works perfectly on my hair in this hot and humid weather. It is a bit on the pricey side but you only use a little each time and the bottle should last me at least a year.

New Look of Denim

I could not resist sharing this tear (click to enlarge) from the latest Glamour magazine showcasing the chic new look of denim. I love everything on this page, more importantly I have just about all the pieces in my closet already! As I have mentioned before I am glad the fuller leg style jean is back, the whole "skinny" jeans look was not my style. I also like the French flair these looks bring. The one item my closet is missing is a classic khaki colored trench, any suggestions? I actually like the Tommy one noted below, might have to hunt it down. Enjoy my friends.

Boxwood

I had a fabulous weekend, how about you? Saturday afternoon I made my way poolside and caught up on some of my magazines. I have subscribed to Town&Country on and off over the years and I am so happy I had my own copy of their August issue featuring the Miles Redd designed Boxwood estate.




Boxwood is a 1920's home nestled among five acres of pristine landscaping, including gardens, pear trees, fountains and even a koi pond. The owners, Danielle and Glen Rollins (CEO of Orkin), contracted with designer Miles Redd to decorate Boxwood and needless to say I am in love with it and have a new found interest in Redd's work.
These windows and downspouts had me at hello.

The foyer is a breathe of fresh air and the dog is the icing on the cake.

Statement Piece

I warn you now, this post is very self serving in that I hope it makes my friend Shelley plan her Stella&Dot party stat! An email from Stella&Dot popped in my inbox last week showcasing their latest collection and I stopped dead in my tracks at the Ivory Maltese Cuff.




Coco Chanel ignited the cuff craze in 1937 when she began wearing Verdura’s version. Today, brands from Balenciaga to Stella&Dot are still getting into the wrist action. And ever since I spotted a picture of Coco sporting her Verdura cuffs I have been intrigued by all jewel encrusted cuffs.




These are the actual Verdura cuffs that were made for Coco Chanel which she wore often.








Another beautiful piece that has caught my eye is the Limited Edition Kara Ross for Tory Burch Evil Eye cuff.

Daily Dose of Dink

I have not posted any pictures of my dink dogs lately, so here is a shot of my Lexiepoo. We took Lex to Cleveland with us and she did great on the plane. She loved it at my dad's house too, he has a large yard and all kinds of animals traipse through it and she loved rolling around in the grass picking up their scents (thus the flecks of grass in her fur). My dad loves this picture because it makes his grass look really good!

Full On Denim

Lately all of my magazines have been touting that denim is IT for this fall. A few of them even highlighted Tory Burch and her first denim collection. The Harpers Bazaar August issue (which is way better than Vogue's August issue in my opinion) says this of Tory:

"Tory Burch is becoming the fashion lover's answer for quintessential
uptown-meets-downtown style. Her latest selection of denim is no exception. The
line features traditional dark and light washes, as well as some arty-cool
designs."




A pair that I would definitely classify as arty.




Still loving this style.


The August issue of People StyleWatch featured Tory's Jeans Tips:

1. Know your style. I don't know anyone who hasn't, at some point or another, struggled with finding the right pair of jeans. Find a silhouette that works for you and stick with it. You can change the wash and the color if you want to tap into a certain mood, but fit is the key.




This style works best on me.

2. Try a fun trend. Style is about expressing yourself - jeans included. Don't be afraid to experiment. I even wear our Biker jeans with leather inserts to work and balance them out with a feminine blouse.

3. Dress them up - and down. There's no right or wrong way to wear jeans. A trouserlike pair with a beautiful blouse and statement heels can be sophisticated and elegant. Then I see girls in the office who wear jeans with nothing more than a slouchy T-shirt, a bold cuff and a pair of flats, and they look so chic.

Hogs Gone Wild

While in Ohio a few weeks ago we went to one of the bike nights at the local Quaker Steak and Lube. Yes it is a real place. I was in awe over how many people and their bikes showed up. I managed to snap a just few pictures but can honestly say there were hundreds and hundreds of bikes.
My dad, stepson and husband checking out some of the rides. I think the "Hoggy's" barn in the background might be a restaurant.





My favorite one of all! Let's just hope it belonged to a female. It also had an LV print pouch on the front.

Vichyssoise


Vichyssoise you say? Well unless you speak French it is also known as Cold Leek and Potato Soup. As I mentioned last week I have been inspired to cook something new in my kitchen and I then stumbled across this recipe on Mireille Guiliano's French Women Don't Get Fat site. I don't know what it is but lately I am infatuated with all things French. The recipe was not that difficult and I was excited to puree the soup in my Vitamix. I tried the soup while it was still warm and I must say it was pretty darn good if I do say so myself. I am going to have it cold at lunch time tomorrow and can't wait!

In Vogue

In case you have not heard yet, Gwyneth Paltrow is on the cover of the August issue of Vogue. Being a fan of Gwyn's I cannot wait for my copy to arrive in my mailbox, which is hopefully any day.




In the mean time you can read this article by Jeffrey Steingarten. Apparently Gwyn is coming out with her own cookbook next spring called My Father's Daughter. I am a huge lover of cookbooks and cooking, but I never seem to utilize my books or my kitchen nearly enough. However, after reading this article it gave me just the right kick in the butt to start cooking up a few storms of my own. A few months back I picked up Sophie Dahl's cookbook and have browsed through it several times but not made anything from it. So now I pledge in front of you, all my readers (which I think is a total of maybe 5 people, including my husband), to make something from Sophie's book this weekend. I will report my progress next week.




And I am totally loving this casual look by Gwyn, can you believe the jeans are from American Eagle? I don't think she can do wrong when it comes to fashion, well in my book anyway.

Bright Eyed


I have been using an eyelash curler for as long as I can remember. I usually get my curlers from drugstores, but my dream curler for a long time has been the ever popular Shu Uemura.
It seems like you can't pick up a magazine without it being touted somewhere within. Last week my curler was totally on the fritz, the little pad thing would not stay in place and I was afraid I was ruining my lashes. So while in Cleveland we stopped at the mall, I popped in to Sephora and purchased my very own Shu Uemura. Now you are thinking what could be so great about a $19 curler versus a $5 drugstore one (at least that is what I used to think). Well I don't know how to explain it but this curler is just brilliant. It's pad is nice (comes with an extra replacement) and the tension on the curler is just right. I can't believe I waited this long to bring one home, I am now a convert and will be purchasing one for each of my girlfriends for their birthdays :)

Strike Out


So this morning I was going to post some pictures from my little family vacay to Cleveland last week. I popped the memory card of my little point and shoot into my computer and bam, it was empty. Guess the man downloaded the pics onto the desktop at home. Until I get a chance to snag some of those photos I will leave you with this picture from Athleta that popped into my inbox this morning. Think she will trade places and bodies with me? Hair, long and pretty, check. Long skinny legs, check. Cute dress, check. Awesome setting, check check!


(Ha! I right clicked to save the picture on my desktop and apparently the picture is 2 different files. Not cool!)

Function Over Fashion


Okay ladies, I bit the bullet and bought myself some Reebok EasyTone shoes. Now before you fall out of your chair from laughing so hard at the idea of shoes that claim to tone your legs, let me give my 2 cents.





My first reaction when seeing these shoes was that hey, they are not that bad looking like some of those orthopedic looking tone-your-legs-and-butt shoes. When you first put these shoes on it feels like there are 2 little BOSU balls attached to the bottom which immediately makes you have to work just a tad bit harder to walk. I got these for walking my dogs only, I will not be wearing them to work or out to eat, trust me. Reebok claims that "EasyTone technology improves muscle tone in the hamstrings, calves and glutes up to 28%". I will wear them on my walks, pray for the best and let you know once my legs look 28% toner.
